Packing Guidelines
Please review the following tips on preparing your belongings for storage.
APPLIANCES: Before storing a refrigerator or freezer, it should be thoroughly dry and stored with its door slightly ajar. Some goods can be stored inside large appliances and boxes can be stacked on top of stoves, refrigerators, and freezers. Make sure that stoves and cooking equipment are cleaned before they are stored.
BICYCLES AND OTHER METAL ITEMS: You should wipe all metal surfaces with a rag and a few drops of machine oil to guard against rust.
BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS: Make sure you pack books to protect the spine. Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors; rather use pallets or skids to prevent moisture absorption. Do not pack fragile items in the same box as books.
BEDDING, CLOTHING, CURTAINS, DRAPES & LINENS: Clothing, curtains and drapes should be stored on hangers. If hanging cartons are not available, these items should be carefully folded and stored in dresser drawers or cedar chests along with bedding and linens. Remove any food stains that may attract pests.
DISHES AND GLASSWARE: Place a layer of packing inside the bottom and at the top of boxes containing glassware. All glass items should be individually wrapped: nest cups and bowls and stand plates, saucers, and platters on edge. Wrapped glassware should be placed near the top of boxes. Fill all empty space with bubble wrap. Do not place heavy items on boxes containing glass.
FURNITURE: Store furniture on a pallet, corrugated or cardboard mat and stand sofas and mattresses on end. Disassemble beds and tables and wrap legs in paper. This will allow you to maximize space and save money! Keep upholstery off the floor. Remember to place a light cotton cover (e.g. bed sheet) on your furniture.
MIRRORS, WINDOWS: These items should be placed on edge, not flat.
RECORDS AND PHONOGRAPHS: Records should be stored on edge to prevent warping.
TOOLS: Metal tools should be cleaned and wiped with a few drops of oil to retard rust. Tie long handled tools such as rakes and shovels in bundles.
PROHIBITED ITEMS: Common sense, state laws and our regulations prohibit the storing of live animals, perishables, liquids, explosives, flammable liquids, fuels, toxic materials or other environmentally sensitive items. Remember to drain the fuel from any engines prior to storing a vehicle or lawn mower. Your storage unit is only available for cold storage of non-offensive materials.
INSURANCE: Bodegas America insures the contents of storage units only for customers who actually purchase insurance and only according to the terms of purchase.
